Gloria's
Features
Comfort food means different things to different people, but for Auckland-based chef Nick Landsman it’s generously filled and toasted sandwiches, made-from-scratch pies and nostalgic sweet treats. This is the offering at Gloria’s, the daytime spot that he and partner Emma Ogilvie opened in August 2022 in the space of their former wine shop Star Wines.
It's just down the road from their other venue Bar Celeste. Inside Gloria’s, there's a black and white chequered floor and the room is light and bright with off-white walls, a white tiled countertop and bright orange accents. A partition shields the prep kitchen out the back and there’s limited seating – but the intention is for it to be grab-and-go.
If it's on offer, order the deli meat sandwich comprising focaccia filled with mortadella and a couple of salamis. There might be a salt beef Reuben or a roast beef sandwich with tartare sauce and peppery rocket. Vegetarian and vegan options could be tahina-based with roast vegetables such as pumpkin, and a salsa verde or zhoug.
A range of toasted sandwiches includes a croque forestier (with mushrooms) and croque monsieur; Landsman’s baking hot pies from scratch without fillings such as corn starch or gelatine, and there are nostalgic sweet treats.
Drinks-wise, there’s a full set-up from Coffee Supreme and a fridge filled with Almighty sparkling waters plus juices, iced teas and house-made lemonade.
