Aframe Kangaroo Valley

Set on an acreage just outside of Kangaroo Valley – about a two-hour drive from Sydney – you’ll find the tranquil Aframe, surrounded by rolling hills, country vistas and not one, but two waterfalls.

Owners Sophie Lord and Ben Gray purchased the block in 2018 when it had no running water or electricity – just some imposing powerlines and an unkempt bamboo forest. The structure was designed by architect Gray and built using timber salvaged from discarded telegraph poles. Recycled timber was also used to build the decking, railing and internal mezzanine; 150-year-old terracotta shingles line the bathroom floor; and brass taps were made by a small family business in Adelaide.

The Aframe sleeps two guests in a queen-sized bed set on the mezzanine. Below, there’s a bathroom with a restored 130-year-old cast-iron tub, a fully equipped kitchen and a cosy living room stocked with books, games and a freestanding woodfire heater.

There are scenic hiking trails all over the property to take in the views and surrounding landscape, with a freshwater creek to take a dip in. Or if you’re after a warm soak, there’s an outdoor woodfired hot tub where you can watch the sun go down or look up at the twinkling night sky.

Outside the property, there’s more to do, with Fitzroy Falls, Belmore Falls and Nellies Glen nearby, as well as the historic townships of Burrawang, Berry and Bowral just a short drive away.
